Welcome - High School Students
Choosing a university or college to attend and selecting a major can be a thrilling--yet daunting--task.   The University of Minnesota, the state's premier research institution, offers opportunities for students to learn by becoming involved in research, outreach and education.  By  combining these experiences with coursework, students in Applied Plant Science (APS) acquire a strong foundation that prepares them for  careers in biosciences, plant science, environmental science, and food production.

Preparing to Study at the U

You will be well prepared to begin classes in the APS program if you have taken a standard high school program with courses in biology, math and chemistry.

Our Advising Counselor will be happy to meet with you to answer questions about applying and being admitted.

We encourage you to schedule a visit with our Director of Undergraduate Studies to discuss designing an APS program of study that best fits your interests.

Learn about courses offered at the U by checking out the Undergraduate Course Catalog.

Visiting Campus

While the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities, is the largest institution of higher education in the state, students in the APS program take many of their classes on the smaller campus in St. Paul campus.  This offers students the best of both worlds--the action and activities of a world-class institution set in a metropolitan area and the comfort and pace of a small-town college. Take a virtual tour of the Twin Cities campus to learn more.

Visit the College of Food, Agricultural and Natural Resource Sciences (CFANS) website, to learn more learn more about the U, meet with with an Admissions Advisor and schedule a campus tour.

You can also schedule a visit with a Student Ambassador.  These are voluntary students who meet with prospective students and their families.  They will be happy to give you the inside story on life as a student at the U.

"I think I've actually grown incredibly over the last year and a half working with [the student-run farm].  I've really been put in roles that I didn't expect myself ever to be in...roles that I didn't see myself being in.  They're roles that I've now become comfortable being in and I think that's really prepared me for the future."

My research focuses on barley breeding and genetics. My specific research interests include studying the genetics of quantitatively inherited traits, evaluating breeding tools and methods, host genetics of plant microbe interactions - both pathogenic and beneficial, and applying molecular markers to crop improvement.
